Superhero Therapy: The Psychology of Harry Potter is hosted by Dr. Janina Scarlet and Dustin McGinnis as they tackle the psychology elements of the Harry Potter franchise, which gets pretty interesting. They talk about the correlation between Dementors and depression, how you can use Harry Potter to help in therapy, the use of boggarts in relation to fear, the separation of the houses and the similarity to the competitiveness in colleges and private schools. If you are a Harry Potter fan, this one is a great listen. It’s informative, but it’s not dry. They do a good job of engaging the listener’s interest. Plus they’ve got good audio quality and good hosts. Excellent debut episode. I’m also marking this one as my pick of the week as it was a clear standout.

As with efforts to better represent women in comics have paid off in terms of new readers, can more accurate portrayals of mental disorders unlock a new demographic? Forensic psychiatrists H. Eric Bender, M.D. and Praveen R. Kambam, M.D. (Broadcast Thought) discuss why accurate mental health depictions matter and how less stigmatizing and more creative representations can benefit both patients and publishers alike. Gail Simone (Batgirl, Red Sonja) will talk about her efforts to accurately represent people with mental disorders and her consultation with clinical psychologist Andrea Letamendi, Ph.D. (Under the Mask,The Arkham Sessions) on the depiction of posttraumatic stress disorder and its treatment in DC Comics’ Batgirl. The Walking Dead explores ways people struggle to survive and hang onto their humanity in the worst situations. There’s no reason why learning should be boring. How about spicing things up a bit?
In my paper for the Journal of Psychology Learning and Teaching, I explored how using games, such as Potions (from Harry Potter), Jeopardy, Quiz Bowl, Brainopoly, and others made it easier for students to learn complicated material in the psychopharmacology course that I taught. Hello Dr. Scarlet,
I first came across your work in researching the representation of trauma in Joss Whedon’s work; I of course came across your short piece on counseling clients through Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I enjoyed it greatly. I just started listening to your Geek Therapy podcast as well; your discussion of Harry Potter is what made me think of the following. Two of my colleagues and I will be putting out a CFP (call for papers) for an anthology on the representation of trauma, memory, and possibly disability in the works of Joss Whedon. Since you publish in “geek” culture and have worked with Buffy (at least) previously and are an expert in psychology, we are wondering if you would like to be one of four editors for this collection. You would not have to write anything for it (unless you wanted to!) but would act as an expert in order to correct any mistakes in contributor discussions of memory, trauma, or psychology in general. My colleagues and I are all PhDs in the Humanities and thus approach the subject through textual analysis. You would be a wonderful addition to the anthology!
